Good news... Dad is home now.

Dad has been complaining about his chest for a few days. We thought he meant his breathing, but yesterday while visiting mom, he said his chest hurt. I told him he should get it checked out. Well, he was driving home & as he got closer, his chest started hurting more, so he decided to go to the clinic which is almost next door to them. They sent him by ambulance to the hospital. I guess they were worried it was the start of a heart attack & wanted him where there was more specialized care. He ended up spending the night in the emergency room under close observation. This morning they sent him home. I don't know what the tests showed but I'm sure they would not have sent him home unless they were sure he was ok.

Here we go again!

Mom called me this morning & asked me to pick up some things from the house for her. Dad was doing laundry when I got there. He sounded pretty good today. Not huffing & puffing quite so much as he has been lately. Mom was doing good today too. She was out of bed but she's not supposed to go anywhere without someone with her. They are afraid she's going to fall again. She's been told that she will be going to a rehab place but we don't know where or when yet. She's on a waiting list... they have lists everywhere for everything. They might send her somewhere else before then so that she's not in a "hospital" all the time. Who knows when that will be.

Dad called me tonight to go pick his car up from the ambulatory clinic. I guess he drove himself there instead of calling me & they sent him to hospital. He also wanted me to turn the heat back on in the house. Now why did he turn it off? Geesh! Parents! He said they are keeping him in emergency for the night. Of course they couldn't take him to the same hospital mom is in!

Not too much to report Friday & Saturday. Mom was doing well. Up & walking around with her walker. She was sitting straighter too. She seemed much more herself.

We went today after church & Terry, Wendy & dad were already there. Mom was laying in bed as she often does when she has visitors. (leave us the chair to sit in then) Unfortunately she had another fall this morning. She was just going to get back into bed when she either saw something on the floor or dropped something so she bent down to pick it up & lost her balance. (the lady in the bed across from her said mom bent down then fell backward hitting her head) Although she says she wasn't hurt & a doctor has checked her out, she has been told she has to stay in bed for now. That is a bit of a set-back for her & I think it has taken some of the wind out of her sails. I hope she will be ok tomorrow when I go back.

We are looking into getting help for them when mom gets out of the hospital (if not sooner) This would include housecleaning, laundry, ironing, etc. & also the cooking of meals since mom has a very hard time with that now. I've been sending them some things... like cabbage rolls, meat loaf etc.. all they had to do was their veggies then. If mom needs any personal care we will arrange for that too.

Carolynn, you'll be happy to know that I have 1991 scrapbooked now & already started on 1992. woohoo!! I'm only 4 years behind now! lol

I almost forgot to post tonight... must be "sometimers" (sometimes I remember, sometimes I don't)

Mom wasn't doing to badly today. She's been up walking a little. She also had a shower... phew.. thank goodness (her words) It must have felt really good to get her hair washed too.

She's still in a lot of pain. They have been giving her Tylenol extra strength (codeine allergy) which doesn't really control the pain, but she was told she can ask for extra if she feels she needs it. Knowing her, she won't ask. She still has some double vision, but that is slowly disappearing. There was a couple of times I thought she might be having a mild hallucination, but I'm not sure. It kind of worries me now as it might be a sign of another stroke. Or it could be something else. We had a good chat about some things before Dad came. He was quite late today. We also watched some of the olympics.

Terry & Wendy came down to see her again last night, which was a surprise to all of us. We sure didn't expect them to come down in the middle of the week! But it was nice for Mom.

Christine came at lunch time & the 3 of us (Mom, Christine & I) had lunch together.

Poor Brianna came down with stomach flu at day care late this afternoon. I drove Christine over to pick her up. Brianna was so embarrassed because when she was throwing up she had an "accident". Mommy told her that happens sometimes to all of us.. even adults & it's something you can't help at the time. I hope it made her feel better but she was still embarrassed.

When I read over my posts they sound so jumbled & chaotic sometimes, but that's how my thoughts go when I'm trying to write down things. I've never been good at writing, composition being one of my worst subjects in school. I'd much rather do math or science or grammar! Oh well, that's how it goes.

We are going to the Doyle's for dinner tomorrow night.. yippee!! I'm really looking forward to it!

Mom was still doing good today. But she still has some unresolved problems. She is upset that she was hallucinating. Most of the hallucinations she remembers, or sort of remembers. Now she doesn't trust herself when something different happens, ie. when someone says something & she can't see anyone. It could be someone talking out in the hall or out of her range of vision.

She still has some double vision but that seems to be clearing up now too.

This morning she went for a liver & kidney ultra-sound. They are trying to check everything.

A doctor came in while I was there to talk with all of us. It seems that mom has a couple of fractured vertebrae. When that happened they don't know. It could have been any one of the falls she's had over the past few weeks. She has also had a stroke that we didn't know about. Again they didn't know for sure when that occurred. Perhaps the stroke was the cause of her hallucinations. We were so stunned we couldn't think of any questions to ask at the time.

That's it for now.

Good news!

I was in to see Mom today & she seems a fair bit better. She was sitting in a chair eating her lunch when I arrived. There was no sign of the hallucinations, but she was quite tired. After getting into bed, she dozed off for a while... until Dad arrived, & then she was awake off & on. After a while an occupational therapist came in to talk with me & to give mom some tests (which she did quite well on) They were memory tests to see how well her mind is working. Later someone from the Geriatric team came to talk with us about what we think Mom will need when she's discharged from hospital. They are going to get together to work out a plan for when she goes home. One of the things they asked was what we thought she needed to be able to do before going home. I said she needed to get back one her feet & be able to care for her own personal needs. ie... washing, dressing etc. She will be getting some physio-therapy soon I think. We shall see.

Since she is still quite unsteady on her feet, I think it might be a few days yet. But at least she seems to be doing quite a bit better than yesterday.

Thank you Lord for answered prayer. And thanks to all who have been praying & are still praying.

I was in to see mom this afternoon.. no change. Dad was there for a short while, but said he wasn't feeling well & went home. Sure hope he's not getting sick too.

Sunday, February 19, 2006

Well, I wasn't disappointed about the dinner last night.. it was truly delicious. I had the tenderloin & Tom had the chicken. Both were soooooo good! I had the dessert that had caramal in its first name lol.. ok so I can't remember what it was called. If you know me, you know how much I love caramal! yummmmy! We sat with the usual crowd we enjoy, Ben & Barb, Linda & Keith, & Sen & Lucy. Great people to be with. Full of fun. One of Tom's co-workers was celebrating his 56th birthday. Our table got together & started the "happy birthday" song. After that, we sang a special birthday song. It goes like this... "Why were you born so beautiful, why were you born at all? You're no bloody good to anyone, no blo0dy good at all!" Ben & Barb started us on that many years ago & of course we wouldn't miss it for anything lol.

After church today, Tom & I went out for lunch as usual. Chris & Brianna joined us as they were going to go with me to visit mom today.

We got to the hospital around 1:45, dad was there already. I was shocked at mom's condition. She is hallucinating & disoriented. She's also very frightened. She asked me why this was happening to her. What could I say? I tried to reassure her but I don't think it has helped. She also said that we were keeping things from her. I asked her why she said that & she said because all the kids were coming to see her. I said well you are in hospital & they (meaning Terry & Wendy, & Christine & Brianna I think) came to see you to cheer you up & help make you feel better so you can go home sooner. I'm not sure she believed me but I'm not sure who all she thinks she's seen. Brianna was by her side & she said there was another little girl with her. There was no one there. She saw a lady beside her bed & the lady held her hand... again no one was there... even though mom was showing me each of the lady's fingers.. she was holding them one by one for me to see. So scary to see that on the person I have never seen easily rattled. She also said that there were so many men in the room... she could see all of them.. when she sees these "people" she is not looking where you would normally see a person but she is looking much higher. Is she hallucinating or seeing angels? Was the little girl she saw hallucinating or the sister who died as a baby? Things I don't know for sure.

I took the nurse aside & talked with her a bit. I doubt if she gets much out of dad too easily. He's very hard to understand at times. It's like his breath isn't enough to sustain his voice sometimes, but he keeps talking regardless. They have done some further tests. I couldn't get out of dad what they were.. he said a stomach x-ray was one. I know they are doing a urninalysis. The nurse told me that one... she said that sometimes a urinary tract infection could cause a person to hallucinate. I'm not sure that is what it is. I have a feeling that it is tied into mom's Parkinson's disease. I guess we shall just have to wait & see.
Since she hadn't urinated all day, they put a catheter in & drain quite a bit... that's GOT to feel better.
Mom hadn't eaten much all day today. Nor was she drinking much (according to dad). Her supper arrived just befor I had to leave. I asked mom if she would like me to sit her up more to eat... she did... I then asked her if she wanted me to cut up some of her food for her... she did.. & I did... last I saw of her she was eating her broccoli & ham... She also sounded just a little brighter by then too. Whether it was the empty bladder or the food intake I don't know.. I just hope it helps her ... she was still hallucinating though.

I had to leave before it got dark as I am partially night-blind & it is very hard, if not dangerous, for me to drive at night. I'll go back again tomorrow afternoon.

Brianna had her sleep-over with us last night. After supper the 3 of us went to see mom in the hospital. Brianna was so good the whole time we were there... working in her work books or colouring. Mom seemed ok last night too... still in pain but otherwise ok.

I talked to dad this afternoon. He went to see mom this afternoon, but he was home by 4:00. Sure wasn't a long visit. He thought mom was depressed. Terry & Wendy came down to visit mom too. Terry wasn't too happy with me because I hadn't let him know that mom was in the hospital until this morning. I told him that we had expected her to come home yesterday so I didn't think about calling him then... guess I should have called him last night. oh well... too late now

Tonight we are going to dinner with the boss. The president of Tom's company puts on a dinner for management & their spouses each February. It's usually a super delicious dinner too. yummmmmmmmm I'll report on that tomorrow.

What week this has been. It started out normal enough, Monday was the usual household chores like laundry etc.

Tuesday I worked on my Alliance Women's Financial records. Getting things ready for the Annual Meeting. After supper Tom & I went to a Valentine's Dessert night at the church which really was a good time. We always enjoy getting together with a lot of our friends.

Wednesday was PAYDAY! After doing some banking & a few other errands, I headed for Burlington to meet Tom for lunch. Since I was somewhat early I popped in to Michael's. What a deadly place for me to go to lol. No, I did NOT buy out the place this time! After lunch I headed for Costco & then back to Hamilton to pick up Brianna from day care for an appointment she had. After meeting Chris, I took them both home & then hurried back to my home to make dinner. Wednesdays is our Bible study night so it's always a rush when I'm late getting home.

Thursday is THE day of days this week. It is my mom's grocery day & I take her to Fortino's. We almost always go out for lunch first, which is a great time because it's about the only time there is just the 2 of us to yak yak yak. About 10 minutes before I would leave to get her, my dad phones. "Pat can you come now, mom's had a fall". That 15 minute drive took me 7 minutes.
When I got to their place, dad informs me that mom wouldn't let him call 911. My first thought was... who gave her the option?

After talking with her & asking a few questions, I called 911 & the paramedics were there in no time. After assessing her condition, they wrapped her up & off she went in the ambulance. We all thought she had at least a broken rib or two. At the hospital she had a cat scan of her head & x-rays from neck to hips. Thankfully she didn't have a single broken bone. I didn't see much bruising, but I'm sure there is a fair amount of bruising internally. She is in a fair bit of pain & cannot stand because of it. The pain is all on her left side mostly along the rib cage & just below it. Because she can't even stand, she was admitted to hospital. It sure made me feel better knowing that she wasn't going home the way she was. After over 11 hours in the emergency room, Dad & I finally went home. We were both tired & hungry since it was almost midnight by the time we got home & we hadn't had supper. Driving home in the rain & dark isn't one of my favourite things to do especially when I'm partly night-blind, but I made it safely.

Today I went to my paper tole class as usual, although I did have my cell phone turned on the whole time. Mom, Dad & the hospital have my # just in case they needed me. I had a doctor's appointment this afternoon so I couldn't take Dad to visit Mom. After the appointment I had to pick Brianna up from day care again for a long standing sleep over. I couldn't disappoint her & Mom would have felt really bad if I did. Tom offered to drive me in to see Mom after supper. She is feeling a bit better, but she is still in a lot of pain & still can't stand up. They are going to keep her in for another 3 or 4 days, partly because she can't stand up & partly because they want to look in to a few things. I think it's because they found she has lost some sensations in her left leg. I don't think Mom had even noticed it before, she seemed surprised when they pointed it out. However, she is in a good place & in good hands.

I know that this is only the beginning of a lot of hard times such as these as both Mom & Dad have a few major physical problems which will only get worse as time goes on. It's so hard to watch them go downhill & slowly lose their health, mobility & independence.

Please keep us all in your prayers, we depend on them.

Now that Jenn, Don, Zachary & Sarah are back from New Brunswick we can celebrate Christmas & Zachary's birthday (which was Jan. 2) with them. We are very thankful to God for their safe journey to & from New Brunswick in some not so nice weather.

Pictured: Paige, my dad with Chloe, Chloe, Sarah, Sarah laughing, Carolynn & Chloe, Jenn playing with a toy Zachary got, Don playing with the same toy (poor Zachary doesn't stand a chance!) & Zachary with one of his cars.

Happy 7th Birthday Zachary. You're my favourite grandson (ok so you're my ONLY grandson) Grampa & I love you very much.

Today is Brianna's 6th birthday. After Church, we got together with Carolynn, Marshall, Paige & Chloe to celebrate her special day. Happy Birthday Brianna. We love you very much.

New Year's Eve! Some of our small group got together at the Innsville for their New Year's Eve dinner theater. What a great time we had. Dinner was excellent & the murder mystery was very entertaining. When it got close to midnight, hats, leis & noise makers (as if we needed them) were handed out. What a racket we made at midnight! After we all sang Auld Lang Syne, kissed & hugged & toasted the new year in with champagne, some of the tables were moved to create space for dancing. A midnight buffet was also served, as if we had room for more food!

Pictured are, Kathryn & Ron Cornelisse, Jan & Roy Bodden, Janice? & Tony (we met them that night), Tom & I, then we all got our hats, & the last 2 pictures show Kathryn & Jane having a good time dancing.
I got all of the pyjamas finished in time. I had problems with both Brianna's & Zachary's because theirs were bigger & I didn't realize the material was not what was noted on the patterns... grrr. However I did work it out & they turned out pretty good anyway. I hope they all like them. I meant to take pictures of them before I wrapped them up, but forgot all about it.. darn. I'll have to try to get a picture of them later... if I remember!

She evaded my camera, but not Carolynn's. hahaha

After Brianna had opened her Santa gifts, we all got ready to go to Carolynn's for the family gathering. We had a great time.

We missed Jenn, Don, Zachary & Sarah though. They were in New Brunswick celebrating Christmas with some of Don's family.

Pictured below are, Chloe, Paige, Marshall, Brianna holding Chloe, my mom, my dad, me holding Chloe, Tom & Carolynn. Somehow Christine evaded my camera!
Ahhh! Christmas morning. Brianna let us sleep in until just after 6. Thank you Brianna. Actually, I had been awake for a while waiting for her to wake up. She was pleased to see that the carrots, milk & most of the cookies had been eaten & especially that Santa had left her some presents! Woohoo!!
